Recycling for Impact

At OG Plastics, we are redefining how waste is managed and transformed in Malawi. We have already invested $500,000 in a state-of-the-art recycling line capable of processing multiple types of plastic—laying the foundation for a scalable, high-impact recycling ecosystem. But we know that machines alone are not enough to solve the supply challenge.

That’s why we partnered with WASTE Advisers to build a community-driven collection model. Together, we are mobilising 100 schools and community groups as active collection hubs, while empowering informal waste pickers to become trained, professional service providers.

Through this system, students bring sorted plastics from their homes, and trained collectors use energy-efficient e-cargo bikes to gather and transport materials daily. All collected plastics are then processed at Malawi’s first large-scale, multi-type recycling facility—ensuring consistent supply and maximizing recycling output.

To expand this impact, OG Plastics is committing an additional $270,000 investment and seeking a $300,000 partnership with the Global Environment & Technology Fund. This collaboration will accelerate recycling rates and scale the model across Lilongwe.

With this initiative, we are not just recycling plastic—we are building a circular economy. Our model will remove thousands of tonnes of waste annually, create sustainable jobs, reduce reliance on imports, and contribute to cleaner, healthier cities across Malawi.
